Description of the organization

The Nuclear Research Institute Rez plc (NRI) is a private joint stock company in the Czech Republic whose primary mission are research and development activities and design and engineering services in the field of nuclear power, technology, radioactive waste management and nuclear medicine. NRI is equipped by two research and experimental nuclear reactors, radiochemical laboratories including hot cell and other equipment specific to nuclear field. NRI employs about 1000 staff, including 600 university graduates. NRI remains the key technical-engineering company contributing to the development of long-term sustainable power supply in the Czech Republic.

Main tasks attributed / previous experience related to those tasks

NRI takes part in the Czech national Partitioning and Transmutation Program, supported by Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade and Radioactive Waste Repository Authority, as a member of the national “Transmutation” consortium. The staff of the departments that will take active part in CINCH have extensive experience with Euratom projects; in FP5–7, they participated e.g. in the IPs ACSEPT, EUROPART, FUNMIG, or PYROREP.

In CINCH, NRI will be one of the representatives of end-users. It will actively participate namely in the survey and definition of the future needs of the nuclear industry park, associated with the renaissance of the nuclear energy, in the field of nuclear chemistry training and/or education. As the representative of the fast progressing pyrochemical community, their experience will be of cardinal importance.

Short profiles of the key staff members

Dr. Jan Uhlíř is Head of the Fluorine Chemistry Department of NRI, which is focussed primarily on R&D of pyrochemical separation (reprocessing) technologies devoted to fuel cycle of advanced GEN IV reactor types. He has been participating in a number of EC-EURATOM 5th, 6th and 7th framework projects such PYROREP, MOST, EUROPART, PATEROS and ACSEPT. He is an external teacher at the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague. In the project he will be involved in the identifying the necessary development in the radiochemical technology and nuclear fuel cycle.

Dr. Atonín Vokál is Head of Waste Disposal Department of Nuclear Research Institute Rez plc. which is focused primarily  on experimental and modelling studies of processes occurring in radioactive waste repositories and of migration of radionuclides.  He has been participating in a number of EC-EURATOM 6th and 7th framework projects such as NF-PRO, RED-IMPACT, RECOSY and FORGE. In the project he will be involved in identifying the potential developments in radiochemistry and nuclear chemistry in radioactive waste disposal in the next 2 to 5 years and including in the curricula topics targeted to meet these needs.
