Description of the organization

The history of the Czech Technical University in Prague dates back to 1707, its current name was accepted in 1920. In 1959, the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering (FNSPE) became a new faculty of CTU Prague. The Faculty is equipped with several large research facilities, such as the training nuclear reactor, modern radiochemical laboratories, etc. Among the first Departments of the new faculty, Department of Nuclear Chemistry (DNC), headed by postgraduate student of Marie Curie-Sklodowska Frantisek Behounek, and later by Vladimir Majer, author of one of the first comprehensive textbooks of Nuclear Chemistry, was created. In 2003, Centre for Radiochemistry and Radiation Chemistry (CRRC) was founded as a research spin-off of DNC. Its primary goal is to continue in tradition of nuclear research and ensure further development in the field of radiochemistry and radiation chemistry at CTU. Today, CTU Prague is the largest technical university in the Czech Republic. Its recent figures are: 3308 employees, 47% teaching and researcher staff, out of which 21% women, 171 professors, 348 associate professors, CTU as a whole participated in 55 European projects under FP6.

Main tasks attributed / previous experience related to those tasks

At this moment, there are 104 students of BSc. or MSc. programmes in Nuclear Chemical Engineering and 24 students in the Ph.D. programme in Nuclear Chemistry at the DNC.
The department has been involved for many years in research and education in the field of partitioning and transmutation, conditioning, treatment, and disposal of nuclear waste. In FP6 and 7, it has participated in the following IPs or NoEs: CINCH, ASGARD, ACSEPT, SACSESS, EUROPART, ACTINET, FUNMIG. In addition to these EU projects, DNC has been recently participating in several IAEA international projects. In addition to the CINCH-II coordination, CTU Prague will be particularly in charge of practical courses development and demonstration, and will be heavily involved in EuroMaster planning and implementation, remote operated labs and simulations development and evaluation, and dissemination and nuclear awareness related activities. So, CTU will contribute to all technical work-packages.

Short profiles of the key staff members

Prof Jan John, the Coordinator of CINCH-II project, is a full professor and the head of DNC.
 His research areas are nuclear waste treatment, separation methods; radio-analytical methods, nuclear spectroscopy; and radio-nuclides in the environment, speciation. He authored 3 chapters in monographs, more than 70 original papers and conference contributions, and 1 university textbook. His total personal grant funding in 2007-2012 has been 1.8 M€.

Dr Vaclav Cuba is an associate professor at CTU Prague. His fields of interest are liquid waste treatment, radiation processing, applied radiation chemistry, and photochemistry. He co-authored tens of original papers and conference contributions. He has been project leader or member of the research team for numerous national research projects.

Dr Mojmir Nemec is an assistant professor at CTU Prague. His fields of interest are separation methods, radioanalytical chemistry and decontamination. He authored some 30 original papers and conference contributions. He has been project leader or member of the research team for numerous national research projects. Few years ago, he spent 1.5 years as a postdoc at the University of Bern and ETH Zurich,Switzerland.
